I love watching these interviews after coming back from the milonga. First, I come back to my home, then I come back to the home of tango. As I watch I reflect my dancing last night. 5 years ago I used to remember what steps I tried, now I only remember how my heart was vibrating and how my partner was breathing with me and how great it felt to be moving like one with the music.
Also, with Troilo’s music usually (in some milongas in NY at least) the fancy people would start putting on a show of steps on the floor, but I see how it can be danced quietly and delicately too.
Thank you Monica.
Dear Kaiyu,
I wish there were more people that understand tango as you do…
Monica
Dear Monica,
It’s important that the student of tango is diligent, but good resources have to be available. That’s why your blog is very important. The Internet is flooded with bad dancing and performance videos that are not practical for milongas. There is no way for me to come in regular contact with these milongueros, talk to or learn from them, so I appreciate your effort very much.
More and more I understand how/why everyone of the people you interviewed stresses the importance of listening to the music. The secret is in the music! It tells you everything!
Kaiyu
Kaiyu, you describe people «putting on a show of steps on the floor» in some milongas, without proper regard to the music. Yes, this has been lamented for some time now. I heard that Gavito once described such dancers as «washing machines»! Perhaps this is a myth, nevertheless the image seems quite apt.
However, now I sense that there may be a very gradual turning of the tide. Am I being overly optimistic? Perhaps people are starting to return to the essence of tango – the music. Resources such as this blog are vital to inspire us in this process, even if some of us may not be lucky enough to dance with such milongueros.
Patricia, I have seen a «washing machine» in action…that is not a myth. I don’t know how much the tide is turning, but I do know that there are people that care, and the essence, essence of anything, is the one that lasts, because it is the very thing that touches our heart. All superficial phenomena will eventually fade away. Even if we are not lucky enough to dance with the best milongueros, at least we try to feel like them and dance the truth. This blog certainly make us feel closer to them, and when we feel closer to them, we get better in terms of essence, even without knowing it.
